Why is Honda VTEC fascinating?

VTEC was born in 1989. It is a 'variable valve timing and valve lift electronic control system' developed by Honda. V stands for variable, T stands for valve timing, E stands for electronic control lift, and C stands for electronic control lift. Control, that is to say, VTEC is the general term for variable valve timing and lift. It is the world's first valve control system that can simultaneously control valve opening time and lift in two different situations. It not only has the advantages of strong horsepower, but also has many advantages such as low fuel consumption, emission and environmental protection at low speeds.

The intake system of the engine is like the human nasal cavity. During running, a large amount of air needs to be inhaled to ensure sufficient oxygen. Cells absorb and exercise vigorously. The same is true for the intake system. The higher the intake valve opening and the longer the holding time, the larger the engine's intake and the increased power. The valve opening is determined by the shape of the camshaft. The longer the camshaft, the greater the opening. When driving at low speeds, the engine intake valve opening does not need to be large, which not only increases fuel consumption, but also greatly reduces driving experience. This creates contradictory situations.

The number and control method of camshafts and swing arms of the VTEC engine are different from those of traditional engines. The valve size and opening of the two valves are different when driving at medium and low speeds. At this time, the opening of one valve is very small. Since the flow direction of the intake air does not pass through the center point of the cylinder, a strong intake vortex is generated and the mixture is uniform At the same time, increase the combustion efficiency, so as to achieve the effect of improving economy and reducing fuel consumption. In high-speed driving, the direction of hydraulic oil is controlled by the VTEC solenoid valve, and the two intake rocker arms are connected into one body, so as to maximize the opening and time, increase the power performance at high speed, and solve the problem of throttle opening. .

In the millennium, Honda added VTC technology on the basis of VTEC, which will continuously change the intake valve opening and closing time according to the engine load , I-vtec was born, and Honda’s self-priming engine ushered in its peak. Entering the turbo era, due to the high intake pressure and high density of turbocharged engines, VTEC has little effect on the intake volume, so Honda canceled VTEC on the intake system, and VTC carried the banner.

Due to the increase in air intake, more precise control is required for the opening height and time of the exhaust. The exhaust is equipped with VTEC and VTC at the same time. While the intake efficiency is improved, the exhaust gas emission is also more thorough, effectively avoiding the occurrence of knocking. The K20C, which has a higher compression ratio, is excellent in power, fuel consumption and emissions.

In addition, in the eighth-generation Accord 3.5L V6 model, the car is equipped with VTEC+VCM engine technology. Three working states of 3-cylinder, 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder can be realized through the VTEC system. When the vehicle is in the low-to-medium-speed range or idling speed, the VCM will control the air intake of the three cylinders on the closed side of the VTEC system to meet actual work requirements. At this time, the actual displacement is only 1.75L. When the speed is moderate or cruising at high speed, the engine will turn off the cylinder closest to the center of each bank of three cylinders, and the engine becomes a four-cylinder vehicle at this time. When the vehicle starts cold, accelerates rapidly or climbs a hill, the engine will start all cylinders to move, meeting the user's requirements for intense driving and speed.

In the face of the upsurge of gasoline-electric hybrids, the first-generation i-MMD was unveiled in 2013, and it was mounted on the 9th-generation Accord . Equipped with a 2.0L Atkinson cycle engine, this system uses a series-parallel structure, using dual overhead camshafts (DOHC), intake valve variable valve lift, timing VTEC system and electric intake valve variable valve The timing i-VTC system controls the VTEC and i-VTC systems through the power control unit, adjusts the intake valve lift, opening and closing angle and duration, and switches to the Otto cycle to reduce power loss and improve conversion efficiency . In the third-generation i-MMD, the VTEC technology is further adjusted, and the intake valve phase is continuously controlled through the electric VTC (variable timing control) to further achieve lower fuel consumption and higher output power.

VTEC, as the soul of Honda, is the world's first owner of finished variable valve technology. Not only does it meet the strict control of displacement regulations, but its power system and fuel consumption performance have achieved quite good results. Today, the addition of i-VTC and i-MMD keeps the classics while continuing to innovate. VTEC has an indispensable credit.
