Buying a new Camry? What you need to know about this new 8AT gearbox

by:Yisheng      2021-06-01

[Technical Channel of Quanzhou Yisheng Machinery Co., Ltd.] At this Guangzhou Auto Show, Toyota displayed its latest 8AT, direct shift 8AT, on the booth. This engine belongs to an eight-speed automatic transmission under the Toyota TNGA architecture , The 8AT was developed by Aisin Machine Precision. At present, the gearbox is only used in the new Camry that was launched not long ago.

The highlights of the gearbox are mainly to reduce torque loss, lower the vehicle's center of gravity, and widen the locking range of the torque converter.

Reduce torque loss:

The highlight of this gearbox is that it has improved transmission efficiency compared to the old 6AT, and torque loss has been reduced by 50%.

Method 1: In order to reduce the frictional resistance of the clutch plate that has not been fully integrated, the new 8AT has optimized the shape of the disc.

Method 2: At the same time, the gear tooth surface is processed by new technology. When the gear meshes, the internal friction can be optimized, and the friction coefficient is lower than the old 6AT.

In addition, the gearbox has other ways to reduce friction, so I won’t introduce them one by one.

Lower the center of gravity:

The new 8-speed automatic transmission is more compact and lighter than the traditional transmission, which helps reduce the fuel consumption of the vehicle, and at the same time It is conducive to the arrangement of the powertrain lower, thereby improving the straightening stability and better turning stability.

Wide the locking range:

In addition, the combination of a widened gear and a newly developed high-performance hydraulic torque converter can achieve more Wide range of gear locks to achieve direct response drive.

Although the transmission is currently only applicable to the new Camry, in the future there will be more models using this 8AT transmission under the TNGA architecture. (Photo/Text/Photo: Quanzhou Yisheng Machinery Co., Ltd., Chi Dongning)
