The 'Green Growth Plan' is an action plan for hydrogen energy and the automotive industry. It aims to fulfill the October commitment of Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga to reduce net carbon emissions by the middle of this century. Japan is one of the largest economies in the world and an important manufacturer of light vehicles (for local consumption and export).

Yoshihide Suga has made green investment a top priority to help revive the economy that has been hit hard by the epidemic, and to align Japan with the EU, China and other economies in setting emission reduction targets. Professor Yukari Takamura of the University of Tokyo said: 'The government has set ambitious goals to become a carbon neutral society by 2050. Specifying clear goals and policy directions in the green growth strategy will encourage companies to invest in future technologies.'

The Japanese government will provide tax incentives and other financial support to enterprises. It is estimated that by 2030, green investment and sales will bring about 90 trillion yen (approximately US$870 billion) of additional economic growth each year; by 2050 In 2015, it rose to 190 trillion yen (1.8 trillion US dollars). The government will have a 20 trillion yen green fund to support companies to invest in green technologies.

According to the plan, by 2035, electric vehicles (including hybrid vehicles and fuel cell vehicles) will replace gasoline vehicles. To accelerate the popularization of electric vehicles, the Japanese government plans to cut the cost of car batteries by more than half by 2030 to 10,000 yen per kilowatt-hour or less.

The Green Growth Plan predicts that in the fields of power generation and transportation, hydrogen energy consumption will be increased from 200 tons in 2017 to 3 million tons in 2030, and to about 20 million tons in 2050.

The strategy also involves 14 industries including offshore wind energy and fuel ammonia. For example, the installation of 45 gigawatts of offshore wind power plants by 2040. Japan plans to use renewable energy 'as much as possible' through wind farms by 2050. It hopes that the share of renewable energy in all energy sources will increase from less than 20% at present to about 50% to 60%, and at the same time reduce the amount of energy required. Dependence on nuclear energy.
